As much as we would all like to be on the first page of Google the day our website goes live, that probably won’t happen for a while. Google’s algorithm is a moving target; it changes a lot, and we don’t claim to be experts in this area.
Positioning on Google depends on many factors:
- Time—Most new sites take a while to rank on Google. For example, Julia overhauled her website in August, moving it to a different domain name. It will take some time to rank on Google under her keyword “stop nail-biting,” which is her new niche area.
- Content – ensuring that appropriate keywords are used and that images have “alt text,” which is the text that search engines see but the average user doesn’t. Devondev will ensure this is done on the pages we initially created for you. And we will teach you how to do this for the content you create.
- Fresh content – new content keeps your site from becoming stale. We will show you how to submit URLs (site addresses) for new posts to Google.
- Fast speed—Google likes fast-loading websites. This means keeping large images to a minimum and optimizing them to a smaller size (file size, not dimensions). You can check your speed at https://pagespeed.web.dev/.
- Mobile-friendly: Google favours websites that are readable on mobile devices like smartphones, and most website builders nowadays default to this.
- Backlinks—Backlinks from other sites help boost your SEO. Be careful of buying backlinks, though—they may help you in the short term but harm you in the long term.
- Competition—If you have many competitors, your chance of getting onto page one may be lower. That sucks, but it’s also the reality.
